Settled in 1937, as a public cooperative community, the idea was the federal government would help create a self-sufficient community that would help relieve the housing shortage in and around the District. This project would also create jobs and stimulate the economy after the Great Depression.

The core of the city known locally as “Old Greenbelt”, is classified as a National Historic Landmark District. The primary hub being the Roosevelt Center, home to New Deal Cafe’, Greenbelt Theater, an arts center. The area houses two recreation centers, a library, a community center, indoor/outdoor pool, fitness center, ball fields, 23 playgrounds, an 1,100-acre National Park, and 190 acres of parkland.

Two major highways pass through and have interchanges in Greenbelt – the Capital Beltway and the Baltimore Washington Parkway. Both are major throughways between Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Virginia. There are 2 major airports within 30 minutes as well as public transportation options such as Metrobus, Metro Rail & Marc trains to help maneuver the area.

There are a wide variety of housing options in Greenbelt. Apartments, single family homes and townhouses are scattered throughout the city. As Greenbelt has expanded to include commercial and new housing areas, it still maintains a small-town atmosphere. Parks, playgrounds and a cooperative spirit help make Greenbelt a great place to live.
